What a great tournament we had!  Thanks to all who participated and especially all who helped.  We had some excellent tennis with many of the championship matches going to a third set.  Below are the winners and the runner-up in each division.

We got the tournament kicked off with a bang last night.  We had entertainment from the high school band (actually they were just practicing) and lots of other sounds and colors….but mostly we had some great tennis!  Thanks to everyone who played and the great team of volunteers who helped.  I think we have some of the best team work in the world here!

It has been a hard week for Cullman Tennis.  We lost one of our own last Friday.  Our community was shocked when we learned that Rob Lyon had been overtaken by his personal demons and took his own life.  We will all miss this guy who always made tennis fun.  He was able to joke with all of us and yet make us feel special at the same time.  There will never be one like him.  We miss him terribly!

The love and support that flowed from our tennis family was overwhelming.  From Brother Jacob’s moving tribute during the funeral, to the seven pall-bearers who were tennis friends, to the 25 to 30 tennis people who congregated to help remember Rob, we proved that we are a family, a family who loves each other.

If we take anything away from this loss other than a big hole in our hearts, let us remember we are here for each other.  Let us remember to show our love and concern for each other.  And if life gets to be too much, call a tennis friend….because we are family!

SATURDAY, MARCH 22 – SPRING PLAY DAY AND SOCIAL

We’re gonna try it AGAIN!  Mother Nature had it too cold then too wet – maybe this Saturday will be JUST RIGHT!

CATA & Cullman Parks & Recreation will be sponsoring a Spring Play Day and Social on Saturday, March 22 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Cullman Tennis Center.  This event is FREE to all tennis players – just grab your racket and come on out.  CATA will be providing meat for lunch – please bring a side dish, dessert or 2 liter soft drink.  Registration forms for the Spring 7.5 Mixed Doubles League will be available and the league will kick off the Spring Season this Saturday in conjunction with the Spring Play Day & Social.

The Play Day format is as follows.  As players arrive at the courts, they will register at the tennis building.  They will then be paired up with a partner and will play one set.  As players complete a set, they will check back in at the tennis building and will be reassigned to another court, most times with a different partner.  Water and snacks will be provided.  This is a great opportunity to meet new players, team up with different players and be exposed to a wide range of playing styles.  Should be a LOT OF FUN!

SPRING 7.5 MIXED DOUBLES LEAGUE

Registration has begun for the CATA/Cullman Parks & Recreation Spring 7.5 Combo Mixed Doubles League.  The season will run from Saturday, March 22 thru Saturday, May 10 (this provides 15 play dates which should allow for several rainouts).  The price will be $15 per person and matches will be played on Thursday evenings (6:00 pm) and Saturday mornings (10:00 am).  You can register at the Cullman Civic Center OR the registration form and league information can be emailed to you as a Word document – just reply back and let me know if you would like them emailed to you.

Team captains for the Spring Season will be Judith Bell and Denise Griffin.  They will meet on Tuesday, March 18, to divide teams.

Coach Don Wilbanks, tennis pro at both Cullman Parks & Recreation and Terri Pines Country Club, started the “Tennis Fun Weekend” at Terri Pines as an opportunity for all adult tennis players in the Cullman area to get to know one another and have a fun time playing tennis and socializing together.  You DO NOT have to be a member at Terri Pines to participate in this fun event – just need to be over the age of 21.

The Terri Pines 2007 Annual Fall “Tennis Fun Weekend” will be held on November 10 & 11.  The most convenient aspect of the Tennis Fun Weekend is that players can come and go as their schedules allow – come and play for 1 hour, for 2 hours or for 5 hours – the choice is theirs.  Last year, participants played as many as 10 sets and as few as 2 sets.  This is a leisurely, fun tennis weekend.  As you arrive at the courts, you’ll register, then Coach Wilbanks will assign you to a partner at the next break.  The format is round robin – swap up partners, some matches will be mixed doubles, some will be men’s doubles, some will be women’s doubles – the process will be repeated throughout the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday evening, we will be grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, served with potato salad, baked beans and soft drinks and we’ll plan to eat around 7:30 then hang out with fellow tennis players.  Match results are kept for each individual player and prizes are awarded based upon the best percentage won/loss record.  To be eligible for prizes, a player must play a minimum of 5 sets over 2 days.  First prize is two Sunday buffets at Terri Pines, second prize is two Wednesday lunch buffets at Terri Pines.  Tennis balls, water and snacks are provided; the event is free for Terri Pines members and $15 for non-members (payment is made when you arrive at the courts).

In order to plan for snacks during the day and food on Saturday night, we need to know by Thursday night, November 8, if you plan on attending.  Remember that we’re limited to the first 32 players so please reply back by email or call Rickey Kreps at home (739-4950) or at work (737-1034 ext. 101).

The Tennis Fun Weekend schedule will be as follows:

Saturday 9 am – 11 am  CATA Adult Fall League Matches (played at Terri Pines tennis courts) 

Saturday 11 am – 4 pm  Tennis Fun Weekend matches begin (Terri Pines tennis courts)

Saturday 6:30 – 10 pm   Social Hour and Cook Out at Tennis Pavilion (dinner served at 7:30)

Sunday 1 pm – 4 pm      Tennis Fun Weekend matches resume (Terri Pines tennis courts)

Sunday 4:30 pm            Tabulate Won/Loss Record, Award Prizes and Wrap up the weekend
